IAB-500

The power connector used to connect the bomb to the plane through its pylon, was mounted flush with the surface of the bomb. It seems that in the diagram above, the plug connector of the pylon is shown. The 8U49 nuclear bomb was nearly indistinguishable externally from the IAB-500 simulated bomb. However, the mounting system of the nose cone of a different design betrayed a 8U49 bomb: there were holes around its circumference to insert the nuts. The pilot could choose whether to use a drag chute before dropping a nuclear bomb (see > MiG-21 control boxes); it is likely that the latter was lodged in the same location as the one used by the TGM-55 tracer on the IAB-500 bomb.
